BUMU Coffee exports high-quality Ugandan coffee sourced directly from long-standing partnerships with smallholder farming communities, connecting growers with responsible buyers around the world.

Founded by community leader Betty Walakira and development practitioner Tamar Dekel, BUMU grew out of more than a decade of working with coffee-growing communities to strengthen agricultural livelihoods and market access. Through these partnerships, BUMU sources coffee from smallholder farmers, many of them women, who cultivate coffee in fertile agro-ecological regions of Uganda known for producing rich and distinctive flavor profiles.

Working directly with farmers allows BUMU to focus on quality from the ground up. Farmers receive training in sustainable coffee cultivation, improved harvesting techniques, and post-harvest processing practices that help maintain high export standards. This includes guidance in selective picking, proper drying methods, and quality control practices that support specialty and premium coffee markets.

At the same time, BUMU builds on a strong foundation of community relationships developed over many years. Many of the farmers participating in the supply network are also part of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) and other local initiatives that help strengthen household income stability and long-term economic resilience.

The business operates through a cross-border partnership between MBEGU GREEN YIELDS LTD (Uganda) and OPUS DEVELOPMENT CONSULTING STRATEGY LTD (Israel). MBEGU works directly with farmer groups, processors, and exporters to secure high-quality coffee supply, while OPUS develops market relationships with buyers and distributors across international markets.

What makes BUMU unique is the combination of long-standing community partnerships, women-led leadership, and direct sourcing relationships with farmers. This approach creates a transparent supply chain that supports farmers while delivering carefully sourced Ugandan coffee to international buyers.
